Mhyra: The residual elemental energy within the world of Ghilaara. Mhyra originates from natural forces such as earthquakes and storms that have shaped the landscape, as well as countless, cataclysmic battles waged between ancient civilizations. These Memories of Ghilaara tie the present day with the scars of her past and can be used to conjure similar forces to the ones that left them behind.

Most humans cannot cast at all, let alone with the skill of the Ancients, but there exist exceptions. Upon finding the words, those capable of responding to Ghilaara can channel her memories into magic. These words, etched on one’s heart by their individual triumphs and trauma, are unique to every caster and their spells. The effects of spells unleashed by casters can be wildly unpredictable based on the nature of the energies used to channel them or the memories contained within catalysts they wield:

  • The capriciousness of the sea and the winds could prove equally befuddling and dangerous to mages unskilled enough to tangle with their shifting nature.

While the practice of spellcasting is generally accepted throughout Ghilaara, the liberated nation of Arenoor has adopted a different perspective on it. Following the overthrow of Veran—a being regarded as humanity’s creator—the newly established Council prohibited the use of magic. They claimed it was to protect the realm and pointed to the devastation unleashed by Veran and his forces during the rebellion.

Those born with the Blessing of the Ancients were once venerated as a bridge between the gods and humankind. However, with spell-craft outlawed in Arenoor, they are now persecuted by the Zherrai-Myr mage hunters and the council they serve. Nobody chooses to receive this Blessing, let alone seeks it out. Those unfortunate enough to undergo a mhyra awakening within the nation of Arenoor are, for all intents and purposes, cursed.
